Starbucks and Music

I've never really been a big Starbucks person because I absolutely can't stand their coffee straight up (I am a black coffee drinker) and don't drink the fou-fou drinks (read: lattes). That changed about a two months ago when I was killing time downtown after a lunch and discovered the magical elixir known as the Pumpkin Spice Latte. Since then I've been hooked.

As my trips became more frequent and started to spend a little bit more time in the stores anxiously waiting for the barista to make my drinks, I've noticed that Starbucks has a lot of music for sale amongst the traditional coffee shop fare of mugs and beans. It seemed kind of odd to me since I wouldn't exactly associate the coffee mega-chain to be pushing music and it made me wonder a couple things. Who the hell buys music at Starbucks and do they sell any of these CDs which are priced significantly higher than traditional outlets? According to an article in the WSJ, apparently a lot of their customers do and the units sold at Starbucks account for anywhere between 20 and 30% of an album's weekly sales. I'll be damned.

Reggie Bush is Filthy.

Here is the evidence.

Cubs: It's Getting Hot in Here

So with the winter meetings about to start it looks like we are going to see a lot of activity and maybe get a few of the question marks that the Cubs have answered and hopefully not mortgage the farm[system] to do it.

Tim has tried to temper my excitement for Juan Pierre for a while but it didn't really sink in until I started looking at his stats and trends. As The Cub Reporter says, it isn't bad but it certainly isn't pretty. So news that the Cubs are in serious talks with the Dodgers for Milton Bradley, still being mentioned (albeit in passing) in the Johnny Damon speculation, and rumored to be trading Ronny Cedeno straight up for Brad Wilkerson is welcome. Bradley will likely put up better offensive numbers than Pierre and, as rumor has it, will only cost us Todd Walker.

Out of all these rumors I think the Cedeno for Wilkerson move is the most interesting because it implies we have a shortstop locked up. This wouldn't suprise me since we've heard lately that movement on Furcal's situation is going to happen soon and the Cubs offer is apparently longer in years and bigger in dollars than the Braves. Though the Dodgers apparently getting in to the mix recently by meeting with his agent yesterday could throw a monkeywrench into things.

So I am looking forward to seeing what transpires in the next week or so.

Quickies - Damn It's Cold Edition

If you missed it, this article outlines HBO's schedule for rolling out new episodes. Ugh, gotta wait until at least March.

Bachelor parties in the 'burbs are beat. I am not opening the floor to debate on this.

Rotten.com(NSFW) just launched a site called Sports Dignity(NSFW) which has some funny/weird/awkward sports photos. (via Deadspin)

Deadspin also listed their three favorite Bears blogs.

There is now a classier way to have your wine by the glass and not involve a box. Wine in a tube.

I was crushed (ok, disappointed) when Adidas decided against releasing Team Zissou's. Hopefully Nike will oblige and hook us up with Air McFly's.

Classic Phat Phree article today. The comments have some good lines in them also. Be sure to check them out.

Quickies - The Its Tuesday and Crappy Out Edition

Madison was epic as usual and there even was a good football game played there. Make your bowl plans, the Hawks are eligible. Color me very suprised with that second half effort.

A few of the Bears aren't satisfied enough with kicking ass on the field and have to do it in the locker room. Unfortunate that this stuff happened as it isn't like we are extremely deep on the O-Line. Not that it makes it alright but rumor has it that someone had it coming to them.

Speaking of which. WTF is with the orange jerseys? Seriously.

Another cool NBA stat breakdown site put together by Knickerblogger. Combined with Popcornmachine's GameFlows, these diehard NBA fans/bloggers have put together some awesome tools to breakdown players and games. (via BlogABull)

Albert Pujols won the NL MVP which was kinda expected but Desipio takes issue with it and makes a case for Derrek Lee.

Definitely check out Broken Social Scene's KCRW performance. Download the MP3's of it here. Ibi acoustically is getting heavy rotation in these parts. (MP3's via Muzzle of Bees)

Gentle Indifference has been doing a year-by-year, CD length, "best of" compilation and just posted a stellar mix for a very significant year in my life 1996. Love the commentary on how/why he chose certain songs. Very good.

The gadget/gamer weblogs got their filthy paws on the XBox360 and are doing reviews. The official launch lineup has also been set.

Finally, "Sheriff Gonna Getcha".

Road Trip: Destination Madison

This weekend is the Iowa vs. Wisconsin football game and, as has become tradition amongst the Sofa King's circle of friends, we are making the trek up to Madison. Last trip saw a ridiculous amount awesomedosing since the tailgating started promptly at 6 o'clock Friday night and lasted through the dramatic 27-21 victory Iowa had at which point it turned into a victory celebration. I am not as excited about our prospects this year since the team hasn't beat a decent team this year, the Badgers are celebrating Senior Day and Barry Alvarez's last home game, and the Iowa's D can't stop anyone let alone a back as dynamic as Brian Calhoun. As the War of Attrition with My Liver (aka College Football Season 2005) winds down, a huge win in Madison would not be enough to salvage what turned out to be a hugely disappointing campaign for the Hawks. It could however be a huge confidence boost for a team that desparately needs a spark (where are the Seniors?) and would create some positive momentum going into Minnesota and the beat ass bowl game Iowa would be eligible for.

Last Weeks Family Guy Intro

Last Sunday's Family Guy episode "PTV" might have been my all time favorite. I knew it was going to be a good when they started the show with two great homages. The show started with Stewie taking out OBL in a very funny, Bond-esque cold open and then, instead of the typical "song and dance" intro, an incredible Police Squad intro ensued with a mind boggling number of pop culture references. On the very cool Family Guy Blog, one of the animators, Dan Povenmire, posted a comment about how they did one of the best scenes in the Police Squad montage, the DOOM sequence:

Me Steve,

We put the "Doom" bit in before we knew there was a movie coming out. I actually had to go on Ebay and buy an old Super Nintendo in order to get video of it for the animatic. When it came back in color we wanted a better capture of it and it took our best minds more than a week of trying different wiring set ups before we were able to get what you saw on the TV.

Posted by: Dan Povenmire at November 8, 2005 07:48 AM

Also, Fox has podcasts now for all their popular shows and has a commentary for the "PTV" episode in the Family Guy section (podcast rss) which is pretty good.

Hot Stove

The GM meetings have kicked off in LA this week and so begins the hot stove league. Fellow die-hard Tim has outlined his wishlist of free agents and has a somewhat optomistic outlook on the Cubs offseason acquistions. What I find funny (sad? because it is so obvious) about his list is that the top 3 players on the list are leadoff men and two of the three are outfielders.

My Top Priorities for the Offseason
  1. Rafael Furcal - young, coming into his own, improved fielder and strong connection to Neifi Perez who was his mentor and recently resigned with the club.
  2. Brian Giles - quality bat that fills one of the holes in the outfield
  3. Bullpen arms - Ryan Dempster converted 33/35 saves and eerily reminds me of Joe B. circa 2003. Always need depth here but I don't think after we resigned Dempster for 3 years $15.5M a run at a big name closer is going to happen.
  4. Starting Pitcher (Mid-Tier) - This is where good scouting and smart GM's make their hay. Wood can't be counted on completing a full year and the need for another decent starter is something that I think is getting over looked.
  5. AJ Burnett or Kevin Millwood - Seriously, is there a limit on how many quality can you have? This isn't that high a priority (a top tier starter) only because of the glaring needs elsewhere (Read: OF) but it would be a shame if we get shut out of the top players in the other holes and don't make a serious effort at signing one of these arms.
A glaring omission in this list is a centerfielder. I really want Johnny Damon but think his contract demands aren't really going to be that appealing to the Cubs and I think that the Marlins are going to want too much for Juan Pierre given his struggles last year. That leaves us with the enigma that is Corey Patterson and the touted youngster Felix Pie to fight for the job next spring. Baseball Prospectus has done a great job of scaring the hell out of me on Pie but after Corey basically crapped the bed last year (.215 avg and 118 K's) and wasn't (isn't?) willing to play winter ball I am willing to roll the dice on Felix.

Couple more Cubs related bits:

I can't help but wonder if the Neifi signing wasn't more to help land Furcal than it was as insurance and bench help. Neifi is a big-time Dusty guy and is a solid backup but the Cubs could have replaced him for a lot less than what they signed him for and still upgraded their bench. Dusty loves to play him and when he does he usually hits #1 or #2 even though he had the same OBP as Todd Hollandsworth (.298 OBP) and hit for a worse average than Big Z (.274 avg to Carlos' .300 avg). (tip of the hat to The Cub Reporter)

Cubs GM Jim Hendry was on local sports radio this morning and mentioned a couple things:
  • Nomar not necessarily out of the picture but Hendry certainly didn't make it sound like he was coming back.
  • Derrick Lee is definitely getting an extension and this will be addressed after the holidays. Probably going to wait and see what Konerko gets.
  • Hendry is very luke warm on the free agents this year and a few times mentioned building via trades versus bidding for whatever is left on the free agent market. Our best pickups over the last few years (Aramis, D. Lee) have come via trades and, this is TOTAL speculation, Pat Gillick is considering shopping Bobby Abreu (damn! he'd look good in RF) so there is always hope. We are Cubs fans after all.

How to Fix the Cubs

The Pittsburgh Pirate ownership, god bless them for being cheap bastards and supplying the Cubs with an excellent major-league level farm club, rejected the inquiries of Mark Cuban to buy the team. Good.

Last week a blurb from one of the major shareholders said that the Tribune Co. might be looking to selloff non-core assets.

Selling the Cubs "makes more sense now than it has in a while," says John Miller, a vice-president at Chicago-based Ariel Capital Management LLC, Tribune's fifth-largest shareholder. "They're trying to get the stock turned around, so they tried buying back their shares, and that didn't work. Now, they move on to non-core assets, like the Cubs."

So, let me be the first person to urge Mark Cuban to put together a group and make a serious bid at the Cubs. We are dying to have good ownership in this town, Cubs fans are incredibly loyal, if you win us a championship we will crown you a king, and you will be buying one of the best franchises and brands in sports.

Grrrr... Even when they suck they still find ways...

The fact that they are scouting him doesn't suprise or bother me in the least. Isn't this exactly the type of thing your scouting department should be doing? What totally honks me off is that the year that the Packers absolutely suck they could end up with the number one pick in the draft where Matt Leinart is available. This probably won't end up being the case since the Houston Texans will probably end up losing more games but I've had to a least entertain this thought and it is enough to piss me off.

The fact that the Packers are scouting USC QB Matt Leinart made national headlines before the Steelers game. We hear the Packers consider this report anything but news. The front-office policy, as with most teams, is to generate their own reports on the top 100 prospects. Most teams do write-ups on the top quarterbacks, and the association with Leinart should not be construed as any dislike of Aaron Rodgers or signal the end of Brett Favre's career.

Mind Dump - Chicago Stizz

RE: Wilco

Chicago Sun-Times has a review up for the Wilco benefit show they did here last Tuesday. They played some new tunes that I am sad to have missed but since I missed out on the ticketing I wasn't really excited to pay a ton of cash to see Spiders, Late Greats, and I'm A Wheel again. Those three songs are just about my least favorite Wilco tracks and they ALWAYS play them when I see them.

RE: My Cubs thoughts at this point in the offseason

Does anyone really care about Kerry Wood and his rehab? He is dead to me and probably, in a best case scenario right now, no better than a fifth starter.

Nomar supposedly is as good as gone
according to Michael Sneed. Since when does she scoop Bruce Levine? But it probably is true since today the Trib has an article about how Rafael Furcal has expressed interest in coming to the Cubs and how the Cubs have the SS and leadoff man as their top priority this offseason.

Finally, this offseason's free agent market is relatively weak everywhere except for relievers. The Cubs better shore up their bullpen. There is no excuse.

RE: All the hubbub regarding smoking in Chicago

The city already has the wheels turning on an indoor smoking ban in the city and smokers were irate. Now they are freaking out over the mayor's proposal to further increase the tax on cigarettes in the city instead of increasing property taxes, cutting more jobs, or increasing the vehicle stickers. While I strongly believe you should be able to kill yourself however you'd like, I can't really find any issue with both moves. The indoor smoking ban is a public health issue not a personal health issue is absolutely the type of thing that the city council should be looking at and the increased tax is the most reasonable solution to generating more money for our inefficient and cash strapped city. Tax the hell out of the vices.
